Horizon 2020 is the European Union’s (EU) latest Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. It has a budget of almost €80billion, and a lifespan of 2014–2020, and is the largest research funding programme in the world.
It follows-on from the previous Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), 2007–2013.
Horizon 2020 is, by design, an open funding programme that encourages and facilitates multilateral collaborations. Organisations and researchers from all nations (not just Europe) are welcome to participate in this programme. Although, large and/or developed economies outside of Europe are not automatically eligible for funding (this includes Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, New Zealand, USA, amongst others).
This programme offers an entire ecosystem for research and innovation, including funding for researcher career development, multilateral and multi-sector interactions, leading and participating in global initiatives, engagement with public and private end-users, curiosity / blue-sky research, targeted problem-based research, and many other aspects.
